2011-2012 Waldorf College Student Art Exhibition

Last night, March 30, was the opening reception of the 2011-2012 Student Art Exhibition at Waldorf College, featuring 21 students and their artwork produced throughout first and second semesters. With 157 pieces on display, it was quite a sight to behold!
The gallery opening was from 7:00-9:00, mostly attended by other students, family, and a great host of the Waldorf faculty. Each student spoke about their inspirations and process, and even though these are my peers and I've been in class with them all year, it's really neat to hear a fresh perspective outside of the studio.

I had three pieces on display that evening: "Go North and Go Home", a landscape of northern Minnesota, "Dylan: The Thinker", a portrait study of my younger brother, and "Danny & I", another portrait study. These pieces are a representative sample of what my senior thesis exhibition will look like in two weeks as I present my senior thesis and gallery talk to the public.

I've been thinking about my senior exhibition lately as being an integral part of the process of "sending". Closing out one phase of life - my college career, as my exhibition is cumulative - and entering into another - Holden Village. I think that having the show opening will serve as a further reality that my four years at Waldorf is almost done, as it should be - I have learned, experienced, and gave back, just as well, to the college that has transformed and inspired me. It is time to move on, and, as the College motto says, "live, learn, and serve".

Graduate School Decision

The graduate school decision has been made!

I know that many of you, for quite some time, have wondered what I was going to do with concerns to graduate education, after considering choices between seminary, library science, or studio art.

I have decided to attend Luther Seminary, in Saint Paul, MN, starting in the fall semester 2013, for a Master of Arts degree in Systematic Theology. God has made it clear that this is what I need to do. Both for me, and for Him. The tuition deposit was sent in this morning, and I've never been more sure that this is what I'm called to do. Luther is the right fit.

Thinking back on all of this indecisiveness, I was reminded of the infamous verse - Proverbs 3:6, "in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." God has now, I believe, made my paths straight and my vision clear. A life lesson has definitely been learned: rely on God for all things, because He will always, always, provide.

Five Weeks Out

Hi everyone,

As you may have heard, I recently was offered a job out at Holden Village in Washington State as a cook. I accepted the position roughly two weeks ago, confirming my arrival date in early May.

Job offer. Woot!
College graduation is still five weeks away. Why am I starting this blog so soon, then?

My senior art show is coming up soon, as well as my senior thesis presentation. I want to be able to capture those moments on here, as well as commencement as a way to cap off my four years of college before moving out to Washington.

This blog is intended to capture life out at Holden Village - work, hilarity, prayer, and faith - as it is lived. I will be updating frequently throughout these next few weeks before graduation, and, as I can when I am out at the Village. :)

Enjoy!
